Not on our watch. Every year, Batteries Plus Bulbs rebuilds and recycles thousands of batteries and fluorescent light bulbs that might otherwise end up contaminating our ecosystem if disposed of incorrectly, ending up in landfills. The toxins released through this process can create serious health risks, impacting the groundwater as well as the plants that grow in the soil (Maple Trees even).
Next Wednesday, June 5th, is the 2013 World Environment Day, as deemed by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). This is a day for the people of the world to come together to promote sustainability, environmental conservation and all things eco-friendly and “green”. Sounds a lot like Earth Day, doesn’t it?
Well, it is a lot like Earth Day, which is a lot like every day at Batteries Plus Bulbs, too. It starts with a commitment to preserving natural resources and being mindful of the environment in everything we do; and it’s culminated with our expansive battery and device rebuilding program, and superior battery and light bulb recycling initiative. It’s Batteries Plus Bulbs’ goal to produce a positive impact on the environment by recycling more items than it sells!
In fact, we’ve made it as easy as possible for customers to recycle their batteries, cell phones, CFL bulbs (which contain small amounts of mercury), and other electronic and lighting devices at any of our over 560 retail store locations. Simply bring us your spent items and rest assured that they will be recycled with adherence to EPA and DOT mandated regulations. Also, for businesses looking to recycle in larger volumes, discount, boxing and pick-up options may be available for you. We recycle tubes and ballasts, too (some fees may apply). Please contact your local store for complete details, or call 1-800-677-8278.
Furthermore, if you bring a device into any of our on-site tech centers, that you’re unsure may be dead or just defective, we’ll be sure to thoroughly test the battery before selling you something you don’t need. If it turns out that you need a new battery, our trained technicians are able to build new battery packs for a number of household electronic products, like: razors, shavers, trimmers, power tools, vacuums, toys, appliances and outdoor applications (solar lights, mosquito magnets, trimmers, clippers, etc.).
If we all do our part to use more rechargeable batteries and devices, more energy-efficient lighting products (CFLs, LEDs, and Halogens), and reuse and recycle before we carelessly just throw things away, we can literally keep tons of toxic chemicals from harming our environment and ultimately, ourselves. Join Batteries Plus Bulbs in celebrating World Environment Day on June 5th, and on every other day, too.
Did you know? New lead acid (car) batteries are manufactured to be 99% recyclable and with 87% recycled materials!
