Most people who spend 35 years with the same company start thinking about retirement, but don’t tell that to Bill Perin. At age 60, after spending three and a half decades as an Operations Director at Macy’s, based in Northern California, Perin decided he wasn’t ready to “quit” (his terminology), but instead chose to open his own business. After all, he wanted to find something local that he could call his own. So, opening a Batteries Plus store in San Rafael, CA in 2007 seemed to fit Bill’s bill, and six years later, he’s considering opening another one.
“Opening a Batteries Plus fit with my previous experiences in retail, along with my training as a Navy Aviation Electrician Mate in the 60s.”
Located in a well-to-do area, with many customers with a propensity for the finer things in life, Perin loves being a local resource for high quality, hard-to-find products. He also enjoys helping his customers maintain their valued possessions with new, working batteries, and he anticipates changing about 10,000 watch batteries this year alone!
“We always have new and fun gadgets, flashlights and the latest in light bulbs. Plus, we can help fix a lot of people’s devices, too.” He continues by saying, “and it only gets better, thanks to the terrific support we get from the corporate product support group – they continue to improve our weekly inventory replenishment process and are constantly refining our product mix.”
Perin is also the Secretary at the local Rotary Club of Mission San Rafael, which supports the mission to stamp-out Polio worldwide, and he also donates to many local and regional charity events every year. Furthermore, his commitment to customer service is exemplary, as can be seen by this example:
“One of our good local commercial customers called us to help him replace six large 8D batteries in a fishing boat down in Half Moon Bay, about 80 miles from our store. He had a deadline to have the boat operating for the weekend. We went to our local distributor to pick-up the batteries, went on to Half Moon Bay and helped with the installation. He made his deadline, no problem.”
Perin enjoys working alongside people he trusts. His workforce consists of two employees who have been with him since day-one: Chuck Cole and Justin Andersen; as well as his son, Marshall and wife, Gwen. He has also recently partnered with some of his best friends to pursue opening a new store in the very near future. Stay tuned for more, because it doesn’t sound like Bill Perin is slowing down any time too soon!
