Spring ahead; fall back – is the expression we use to remember which way to switch our clocks to and from Daylight Saving Time (DST) twice a year, in most parts of the United States, for the majority of the past 50 years. However, the reason for bi-annually moving our clocks an hour either way has been greatly disputed over the past century. Like many things, there are two contrasting viewpoints regarding the concept of Daylight Saving Time – appearing to conserve energy and boost service industries, on one hand, while hampering the likes of farming and other daylight-dependent jobs, on the other. Here’s a snapshot of the rationale and history behind DST:
Basically, none of these reasons seem to solve the debate, one way or the other, justifying to everyone why we need to switch our clocks back and forth (except maybe that last one!), so just enjoy that extra hour of sleep you will get this Saturday night (clocks change at 2AM on Sunday morning), before someone decides to change things up again. Until then, let’s embrace our return to Daylight Wasting Time, otherwise known as Standard Time, and make the best of it.
So, let’s talk about something productive, then, like the clocks that we know aren’t going away. At Batteries Plus Bulbs, we sell batteries for most wall clocks, alarm clocks and other timepieces that need batteries to operate. Plus, we install batteries in most watches, and we perform this service thousands of times annually – accurately setting them for customers at any time of the year!
Here’s a list of the top 10 clocks in the world – most, however, don’t operate on batteries.
And, if conserving energy is really the goal here, then let’s talk about switching from incandescent light bulbs to CFLs or LEDs. Because, if the nights are going to be longer, and our lights are going to have be “on” more often, then the most effective way of truly saving energy is to use light bulbs that only require 15% – 25% of the energy as traditional bulbs. Now is a great time to purchase them at Batteries Plus and Batteries Plus Bulbs, as LEDs are up to $10 OFF with a mail-in rebate!
