The Fourth of July is a time to commemorate our independence and pay tribute to the bold and brave actions of our forefathers (and mothers!) that resulted in establishing our great nation.
Over two hundred and thirty years later, less extreme, yet still controversial, declarations of independence are still shaping our country. For example, almost six years ago, the 110th U.S. Congress passed the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, promoting increased usage of vastly more energy-efficient products. This act, seen as radical by some, calls for improved fuel economy in cars and trucks, increased production of biofuels, and more energy savings options in appliances and lighting; in part, to reduce our dependence upon foreign sources for energy, and in part, to give consumers the ability to purchase more energy-saving alternatives.
It effectively enacted the phase-out of incandescent light bulbs from the marketplace, beginning in 2008 and concluding by 2014, allowing consumers access to only the most energy-efficient, technologically-superior lighting products available, such as CFLs and LEDs. Switching to these products will account for a roughly 200% greater efficiency of light bulb use overall, resulting in significant savings for consumers on their monthly energy bills and preserving substantial natural resources for future generations.
