When Dr. Egon Spengler infamously cautioned his fellow Ghostbusters that “crossing the streams” would be “bad”, he was referring to the total protonic reversal that would occur if two or more of them might mistakenly cross the streams from their unlicensed, nuclear-powered, backpack-encased, personal proton packs. Now, sure, these devices were just fictitious props in the 1984, highly successful, sci-fi comedy; however, the batteries that powered these props, making them light-up and giving them their wonderfully dramatic special-effects, were very real indeed, weighing in excess of 20 lbs. each!
Today, real-life “ghost hunters” don’t have the luxury of using a proton pack to safely corral and secure a ghost before getting “slimed”, but they do use numerous electronic devices to investigate and record paranormal activity. And when they’re on-the-go, chasing down spirits, they can’t afford being hardwired to an outlet, or losing a charge at a most inopportune time. Simply put, reliable batteries are vital in the fieldwork of a ghost hunter.
“One of the most expensive things a paranormal investigator knows is that he must carry multiple sets of batteries since spirits like to drain them.” remarks Rod Franklin, founder of the Phoenix, Arizona Paranormal Society (PAPS). “Our team carries at least 10 sets of extra batteries on each investigation so we are never left in the dark. Everything from IR, K2, Franks Box, Motion Sensors, and Night Vision–our whole existence is on batteries.”
