What does Thanksgiving mean to you? Is it a time to give thanks to your god, your family, your friends or your employer? For your health, the food on your table, the roof over your head or the job that pays your bills? Does it mean spending time with family, eating too much and watching football? Or, is it a quiet day to spend with someone special, go out to eat, catch a movie or stand in line at a local retailer to get in on the holiday deals that are sweeping throughout the country?
At Batteries Plus Bulbs, as a successful and growing corporation that has recently had the good fortune of celebrating its 25th anniversary in business, we are thankful for the opportunity to give back to hundreds of communities throughout the country. From each of our local franchise groups, to our corporate headquarters, the company takes pride in its duty of social responsibility; and being able to participate in these acts of kindness is a privilege that we deeply value. We are happy to share our stories in order to encourage participation and further increase awareness for causes we feel are important to pursue.
Personally, I recently had the opportunity to take part in a day of volunteering for the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate with some of my fellow co-workers. By the end of the day, it felt so good to know that by donating a day in my life (just one day!), I was able to help, in some small way, make a family’s new home that much closer to being lived in. As the local representative explained to us Habitat’s world-wide mission, we felt the true value in what we were doing. Then, as we swept, painted, and bonded together outside of the office, I wondered if we weren’t getting as much out of this moment as the people who would eventually live in this home. Putting my “real-work” aside for a day, and sweating while performing manual labor, I felt a sense of worth that went far beyond anything monetary; I felt better about myself having helped someone who really needed it.
Beyond volunteering our time locally, Batteries Plus Bulbs also recently donated over half-a-million dollars’ worth of energy-efficient light bulbs to Habitat for Humanity build sites in Alabama, Arizona and Wisconsin.
Here is a list of other charities we support, with links to their websites. There are so many great charities out there, but these are a few that have hit close to home for some of our staff, further resonating their importance and direct effect on our daily lives:
After all, as we all rev-up for this crazy time of year, it’s easy to lose sight of the true spirit of the holidays, and we can all use inspiration to remind us of our many blessings. Whether buying a present for an under-privileged child through Toys for Tots, or dropping a quarter in one of those dozens of red buckets we will pass by every time we go in and out of a store, every little bit helps; and the smile that we give to someone else will undoubtedly come back to us.
