Having grown up in Eastern Washington and spending years living in both Texas and Pittsburgh, Laura Lewis is happy to be settled in Idaho Falls, owning and operating a couple Batteries Plus Bulbs franchises. Recently ranked as one of the best small towns in the U.S., Idaho Falls offers its roughly 60,000 citizens a low cost of living and crime and unemployment rates that are notably lower than the national averages. Furthermore, its diversity, in both people and landscape, make it a great place to live and raise a family.
For Lewis, living here just “feels right”, and in order to find a business venture that she could feel the same way about, she approached a franchise broker for options back in 2007. After all, she wasn’t interested in developing a new, innovative idea of her own, but based on her past business experience, along with her desire to be her own boss, owning and running a franchise seemed appealing. After being interviewed for a few hours, she was given three businesses to consider. After quickly dismissing the other two, she was down to Batteries Plus. She then turned to three people, whose opinions she respected, for their thoughts on this battery franchise.
“I asked my dad, my ex-husband and my current husband what they thought of Batteries Plus and they all replied with “I love Batteries Plus”. Since I value all three of their opinions, based on their different skill-sets, I decided to attend Discovery Day for potential new franchisees and I was sold. I came back to Idaho Falls and began looking for the right space. As soon as I found the building, it all clicked, and I was ready to start things up – it just felt right. Six months later, the store was open.”
Since opening her store in April of 2008, Lewis has seen a steady growth in her business over the years. Even having opened at the onset of the national recession, her store continued to sell batteries.
“I’d say it’s a pretty recession-resistant business model. When the economy is good and people are buying new toys that need batteries, we do well. And, when people don’t want to buy new things, but would rather keep their current devices running longer instead, again, batteries are a great solution.”
Experiencing success and enjoyment with her first store, Lewis decided to open another one in nearby Pocatello, ID in March of 2010. Here, she experienced a different set of challenges, but quickly re-focused her associates on their core values.
“We have developed a very team-oriented atmosphere in our stores. It’s important that every employee buys into that, or else it won’t work out … Customer service always; it’s as simple as that.”
Focusing on optimizing the prosperity of both locations, Lewis is currently content with owning the two stores and taking both staffs to the “next level”. After all, with newfound success selling energy-efficient light bulbs, at both the retail and commercial level, Lewis’s stores are just beginning to tap into significant new revenue streams.
“People always talk about ‘taking things to the next level’; what does that mean anyway? How many levels are there? Infinitely many, I suppose. To me, there always seem to be areas to improve upon, and that’s a challenge that I enjoy.”
With constantly evolving technologies and new customer solutions to provide on a daily basis, Lewis thrives on the uniqueness of her continually-changing business. A friendly, hands-on business owner, she knows that if she doesn’t believe in what she’s doing, she won’t be successful.
For Lewis, you can tell that she wouldn’t allow herself to just do something she doesn’t love, in a place she doesn’t want to be, which is exactly why she owns Batteries Plus Bulbs stores in Idaho Falls; because for her, it just is right.
“When a couple came in looking for batteries for an old photo cube with a recording of their deceased daughter talking to their granddaughter, I special-ordered them. When we installed them and played the recording, there were tears in all of our eyes. It was one of our smallest sales, but the most important to me.”
