With a BA and Master’s degree in Accounting, Peter Schaumann added up the numbers and made a calculated decision to invest in Batteries Plus Bulbs franchises. Along with his wife, Emily, the Schaumanns now own and operate three stores in Southern California. Having purchased their first location in Vista back in December of 2009, in just over four years, they have acquired two more, in Escondido and Lake Forest, exponentially growing their business and staff in a very short amount of time.
A multi-tasking, hands-on owner, Peter Schaumann oversees most of the day-to-day operations of his stores, while raising four active children with Emily, and spending time getting involved with his church and the local Chambers of Commerce in Vista, Oceanside and Escondido. Furthermore, he recently hosted customer appreciation events at each of his locations over the past two weeks. Although admittedly still overwhelmed with all that he has going on, it’s obvious that Peter Schaumann takes everything in stride, appreciates the complexity of his life, and wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I have great people around me; three great store managers and great sales reps, and I enjoy forming relationships with our customers. People are very appreciative about living in this great part of the country, and it makes everyone in the community pretty happy. This makes doing busy around here enjoyable.”
Initially referred by his neighbor’s brother, a multi-unit franchise owner in Virginia, Schaumann found the prospect of becoming a Batteries Plus Bulbs franchisee fairly intriguing from the get-go. He quickly realized that by having four key sales outlets: retail, commercial, government and online, he could sell just about anything if he was able to develop good business relationships with vendors. After understanding the intrinsic demand for all types of batteries and light bulbs, across all types of applications and industries, he saw that a huge potential existed in this already established franchise business model.
”Previously, as the president of a small business for eight years, and having to manage company expenses, I clearly recognized the value of leveraging a proven, successful franchise and sharing in the costs, resources and brand recognition across the entire nationwide system. There’s no way I could’ve ramped-up my business so quickly if I was starting something from scratch, on my own.”
Furthermore, as Schaumann bought all three of his locations from existing Batteries Plus franchise owners, the infrastructure was already in place and a reputation had been established in the communities. And when he realized that a huge void at the Vista location existed in their commercial book of business, he also saw this as a sure-fire way to immediately step-in and impact his bottom-line.
“When the Lake Forest store joined the Schaumann Franchisee Group, the prior owner agreed to continue promoting Commercial Sales, knowing that his expertise would boost sales throughout all the stores. This turned out to be a perfect transition for both of us. Utilizing his experience, we’ve been able to ramp-up commercial sales at the other two stores, as well.”
Offering new products, mentoring employees, opening stores, generating sales, entertaining customers, and being a dad should keep Peter Schaumann pretty busy for the foreseeable future. Still, he seems to be in his element, having found a business that caters to his strengths and allows him to grow it at his own pace (which appears to be pretty quick!). Essentially, the core of his success seems to be deeply rooted in his day-to-day philosophy: Go Beyond Expectations. This explains why the most fundamental joy he still gets from owning Batteries Plus Bulbs franchises is when he’s able to solve a flabbergasted customer’s problem, sending them out the door with a working product in their hands and a smile on their face.
You know how to run a business but in terms of running this kind of business, it was all totally new to us. I guess I’m still an expert in training, but we’re learning a lot. There are three parts to this business: you have retail, commercial, and technical. I looked at a lot of the businesses that were for sale and I realized that they were for sale for a reason.
