A lot has changed since Batteries Plus Bulbs was founded back in 1988. For example, back-to-school shopping back then meant stocking up on “No. 2” pencils, spiral notebooks, some loose-leaf paper, folders and a trusty Trapper Keeper®. And not just any Trapper Keeper, but one that made a statement and epitomized a student’s most deeply-rooted interests, like G.I. Joe, heart rainbows, ponies, kittens, or any of the other countless options available. Essentially, the Trapper Keeper kept kids’ entire school-work and life encapsulated in binder rings and folder pockets, all held tightly together by the same incredible invention that was keeping their shoes snugly affixed to their feet – Velcro!
Although a version of the Trapper Keeper is still available for today’s student, technology has replaced much of the functionality of this all-encompassing organizer, rendering it virtually obsolete. With the advent of convenient, portable tablets, back-to-school shopping today may be more streamlined, choosing between an iPad® or a Chromebook, regardless of any design that may or may not be adorning its cover.
So, in honor of most of the country getting ready to go back to school, here’s a comparison of these two highly popular school supplies of yesterday and today:
|File storage||Holds multiple file folders for storing papers for all school subjects||Has multiple gigabytes of memory to store thousands of files, songs, photos and videos||Tablet|
|Image capturing||Able to draw stick-figure portraits of your friends – no selfies!||Can easily take high-definition photos and videos of friends and anything else imaginable||Tablet|
|Damage control||Papers could fly everywhere if you drop it, causing utter humiliation||Screens can easily crack and need to be replaced if dropped||Tied|
|Affordability||Costs less than $20, including paper, folders and other supplies||Costs hundreds of dollars, including case, headphones, extra charger, etc.||Trapper Keeper|
|Ideas vs. movie downloads||Allows you to daydream about movies and TV shows that you like||Can download virtually any TV show or movie that you can possibly think of||Tablet|
|Case/cover options||Comes in all types of colors and designs with awesome theme-inspired graphics||Mostly comes in limited colors and fairly bland style options||Trapper Keeper|
|Battery requirements/Wi-Fi enabled?||Doesn’t require recharging a battery, but also has no Wi-Fi capability||Need to frequently charge the battery and replace after extended use – always Wi-Fi enabled||Tied|
|Uses Velcro?||Always!||Some cases have Velcro||Trapper Keeper|
In the pure functionality-related categories the Tablet blows away the Trapper Keeper, while the latter is still much more cost-effective, offers greater case variety and utilizes Velcro supremely. And, when it comes down to the “tied” categories, taking advantage of convenient tablet repair services and choosing the highest-performing, longest running battery replacements will likely shift these two categories in favor of Tablets, as well, giving them a decisive advantage over Trapper Keepers as a whole.
In conclusion, it appears the Trapper Keeper’s finest days are likely behind us, as technology has again trumped nostalgia (and Velcro). This serves as yet another example of just how drastically different things are today than they were 26 years ago.
