Mother’s Day was founded to celebrate motherhood and a mother’s extraordinary impact on society. Many of the female franchisees in our system are real-life superheroes who have built successful businesses while also co-running the household. In honor of this holiday, we’d like to recognize all of the smart, talented and determined store owners who have excelled at starting a business.
Alaska native, Mary Banning, is a great example of a “mom-trepreneur” who has learned how to balance family and work. She co-operates three stores in Fairbanks, Wasilla and Anchorage with her partner in crime, Larry, and their children, Amanda, Brianna and son-in-law, Vance.
High school sweethearts, Mary and Larry (it has a nice ring to it) are no strangers to sharing the same workplace, as they worked seven years together at a local oil company. In 2000, Larry was in search of a new business venture and began researching franchising opportunities. He, with Mary’s support and guidance, landed on Batteries Plus Bulbs as the company’s proven business model, extensive training and support aligned with their interests and goals. Additionally, Alaska was lacking Batteries Plus Bulbs locations, so the duo teamed up to open their first store in Anchorage in 2001. Larry’s go-getter attitude made him the ideal candidate for daily store operations, while Mary’s more reserved personality made her well-suited to oversee accounting.
Her piece of advice for women and mothers looking to start a business with their partner is to keep their head up, stay positive and learn to separate business from the relationship. For those interested in franchise ownership, Mary encourages them to take the leap.
“Like anything you want in life, you have to work for it,” says Mary. “The more you put into your business, the likelihood it will succeed. For me, owning a franchise has been worth it.”
Thank you to Mary and all of the Mom-trepeneurs of Batteries Plus Bulbs. Happy Mother’s Day.
