As a national franchise with a network of more than 660 stores, we owe our success to our hardworking franchisees, operating their stores all throughout the nation. In honor of this month, we’ve spotlighted three outstanding Latino-American franchisees—John Alvarez, Jose Perez and Arthur Romero — who have continuously demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication and passion as Batteries Plus Bulbs franchise owners. Each successful in their own right, Alvarez, Perez and Romero were able to provide us with anecdotes on how their backgrounds have shaped them into the successful business owners they are today.
My parents are from Puerto Rico so I was taught at a very young age that in order to be successful in life, I had to work hard. Growing up in a low-income household, my parents made sure I was able to get the most out of life, with the little resources we had. They emphasized the importance of education and taught me that with a strong foundation, I could accomplish anything. As I got older, I was lucky enough to have mentorship from a number of successful individuals in business and I was able to channel what I’ve learned from them into running my own business with Batteries Plus Bulbs.
John Alvarez is a multi-unit franchisee who owns eight stores in Ohio and one in Indiana.
I’m from Cuba and actually left the country in 1961 as a political refugee after Cuba became a Communist state. When I was young, my parents taught me the importance of a strong work ethic and that really influenced my life growing up. Because of how I was raised, I made sure to instill in my children the value of hard work and perseverance at a young age. Thanks to Batteries Plus Bulbs, I’m now able to work with my sons Tony and Miguel as well as my daughter Lara every day and we’ve all developed a strong loyalty and deep respect for one another and our customers. I believe this is a huge reason why our family business has become so successful over the years.
Jose Perez is a multi-unit franchisee who owns nine stores through the state of Oregon.
My parents came to the U.S. from El Salvador; they didn’t have family or friends over here, but worked extremely hard to create a life for themselves in a completely unfamiliar country. My dad is very resourceful and in many ways he’s like the Hispanic “Kramer from Seinfeld,” – always coming up with new ideas for business ventures. As an entrepreneur, my dad worked for himself and often times took on many different roles and I really looked up to that. As I got older, I was able to work with him and learned a lot about entrepreneurship and managing businesses. On top of everything I’ve learned from my parents, they have shown me that what’s most important is family and they will always be my first priority.
