There’s a new oil boom occurring in America and it’s not in Texas, California or Alaska; it’s in western North Dakota. Over the past 6-7 years, towns like Minot, ND have been going through a major transformation as tens of thousands of people and businesses flock to this area, known as the Bakken formation, to find their fortune in oil. Having lived here for over 20 years, new Batteries Plus Bulbs franchisee Mike Marchus has seen these monumental changes firsthand. And, with demand surging, he’s taken this opportunity to open a business in the midst of the flourishing economy in this area.
Since 1991, Marchus had been a law enforcement officer in Minot, first as a local policeman and then as an undercover narcotics officer working for the attorney general’s office for 14 years. After years of working long, unpredictable hours, he was ready to make a change. Recognizing the niche served efficiently by this franchise model, and leveraging his established reputation in the community, Marchus found opening Batteries Plus Bulbs in Minot to be an ideal fit for him and the community.
“I was actually looking for a battery for a flashlight I was using for work and I couldn’t find it anywhere around town. So, I looked it up online, and Batteries Plus Bulbs came up. Sure enough, I ordered the battery, it worked great, and I immediately began researching this niche franchise opportunity,” said Marchus.
Since opening in November, Marchus says that business has been even better than he ever expected. He has had to place multiple orders to keep restocking his shelves with products, especially LED light bulbs. He and his staff are continually learning how to better operate their business every day, and with so much retail traffic, they have plenty of opportunity to put their training to use. Marchus doesn’t seem to mind, as he’s fortunate to have tremendous support and resources, while working with a great staff that is eager to learn and provide top-notch customer service every single day.
“I was able to hire two guys that I’ve known for years and another employee who came as a referral from someone I trusted. So far, it’s worked out great, and I look forward to having my daughter start working part-time in the near future, too.”
Although Marchus is still putting in full days with this new job, he has the satisfaction of being his own boss, working with friends and family, and not worrying about being on call throughout the night and on holidays. He enjoys that each day is different and the time seems to fly by, since the store is always busy. Looking to open another store in the near future, Marchus is eager to maximize the success of his Minot location, and he knows he has only scratched the surface, mentioning his pursuit of commercial business in 2015.
“Being in drug enforcement, I worked closely with hotel and apartment managers throughout the city, which gives me a nice opportunity to discuss their battery and light bulb needs now that I have a store with products they need. Plus, I have a lot of other friends and acquaintances in town, so it’s great to have a local shop to serve them and the rest of the community.”
With a surging population and demand in Minot, it appears Marchus has already established himself as the local go-to store for battery and light bulb needs. And, with other locations in his plans, as well as realistic growth initiatives, Marchus seems poised to make the most out of his new year.
