In honor of the great Stephen Hawking and his groundbreaking theories of physics, here’s a breakdown of the battery-powered devices that measure the continuum of time.
Watches have been around for centuries. More practical than its ancestor the sun-dial, these pocket clocks allowed people to tell the time wherever they were. By the 16th century, the watch became a mechanical device with gears and hands that were powered by a winding mechanism. Eventually, with the advent of the quartz watch in the 1960s, watches became electrical and needed a battery to operate. By the 1980s, quartz watches began dominating the marketplace and today they are the most common type of watch on the planet.
These days, watches come in all shapes and sizes and are powered by different types of batteries. The two most common types of watch batteries are silver oxide and lithium. These electrically powered devices have come a long way from the pocket watches of years ago, going beyond analog designs into digital formats.
Advanced connectivity and battery technology has led to today’s smartwatch designs, allowing watches to do far more than simply tell time. It seems that every mobile device manufacturer is getting in on the action with the new wearable technology. Here are a few that made waves in 2014:
