Growing up in a family that owned and operated a chain of department stores in Puerto Rico over the last century, Carlos Quinones was destined to open his own retail location someday. Finally rooting himself in sunny Miami after 20-plus years of travelling around the globe as a software implementation consultant, Quinones traded in his suitcase for a battery and light bulb franchise in 2012. SETTLING IN What attracted Quinones to Batteries Plus Bulbs was the ability to invest in a proven business concept with support and brand recognition already in place. Even in a cut-throat business environment like Miami, he feels the opportunity with this franchise model, along with his skillset, have him moving on a solid path to success. “Miami is a growing market, with many purchasing offices and international headquarters for businesses located here. This offers a lot of opportunities for new business, but you need to be on your game at all times, or you’ll lose a sale to the next guy and never make it.” A DIFFERENT KIND OF RETAIL Being in this challenging market, Quinones recognizes the need to operate a heavily assisted-sales retail store, where his knowledgeable staff and customer service will stand out from the competition. Consequently, it’s also the most difficult part of his job; employing a staff that can learn the array of products and technology needed to be an effective sales associate. “It isn’t like working in a clothing store, where you can point to a part of the store for a customer to find what they’re looking for. Most of the time, they don’t even know what they’re looking for, so my staff needs to be able to troubleshoot and figure out what would be the best solution for each unique customer demand.” FATHER KNOWS BEST Still, as his experienced father always reminds him, “retail is retail” and the same principles apply across different markets and industries. As Quinones still frequently asks his father for advice on running his store, the most important lesson he ever learned from his dad was to “never give up”. This means that in a sales environment where rejection and competition dominate the field, perseverance and resilience are vital. As a consultant working with numerous businesses, government and education entities, gaining clients’ confidence and subsequent business was Quinones’s primary objective, and his friendly personality and tenacity were his key attributes. Conducting business all across the country and the world, he put his father’s mantra to the test and found it to be worthwhile in whatever he did. SPREADING THE KNOWLEDGE Now that he owns his own store, with plans to open another one in the near future, he’s quick to recognize and aggressively pursue all retail and commercial opportunities. Dealing with business decision-makers who appreciate Quinones’s acumen and international experience, he is able to win their trust with his undeniable commitment to serving them better than the competition. Quinones also instills the importance of his sales associates believing in themselves and what they are selling, or else their customers will never believe in them either. And, in a specialty retail store, that means having the product knowledge to be able to speak intelligently to consumers and the personality to effectively convey the information. After all, Quinones reminds them, “you need to sell yourself first, in any type of business, otherwise, people won’t even listen to what you have to say.” Sounds like another valuable piece of advice this has served him well along the way.
